The Mike Smith Studio (MSS) is a design and fabrication facility that has
been uniquely instrumental in realizing important contemporary works of art
since 1990. The design and engineering solutions at MSS have produced a
series of remarkable creative and experimental exchanges. What results from
this unrivalled archive of projects is the experience gained from our unique
hands-on approach to design, engagement with research, and singular vision
for collaboration. All projects at MSS require a symbiosis between the
practical and the creative that has extended the parameters within which
artists work.
The Studio incorporates a wide vocabulary of facilities, with an interdisciplinary staff from a diversity of backgrounds such as fine art, industrial design, graphic design and engineering. As MSS evolves and expands, closer links with industry, educational resources, and the field of design will be developed, a natural consequence of the activities of the Studio.
